After putting 168 hours into this game, I can honestly say that South Park SoT still may have my full attention. So you start off as the new kid on the block ( for all intents and purposes pun intended) who is a customizable character of your own creation. Just to spoil some of the intro for your pleasure, a few minutes after making your character you soon run into Butters who after a exchange of dialogue; well your custom character doesn’t talk so more like Butters talks while you stare at him with those big eyes. You get taken to Carmen who gives you the name Douchebag no matter what you may want to call yourself as the stories hero, Carmen will ruin hope and destroy dreams with his classic humor. You’re then invited by Carmen himself to play a live action role-playing game (L.A.R.P) which in the stick of truth is the all powerful weapon and allows the holder control over the universe and whatever he/she says is law.
I’ll be the first to admit that the game play does get a little repetitive but the story just kept me so engaged into the game that I could careless about the repetitiveness. A highlight of my experience are the dope specials which bring me back to nostalgia of PS1 games with specials than zoom in on a bad poly character to so their distorted faces while they charge up for a attack and the dialogue exchange between Stan and Butters definitely gave me chuckles more times than I can count. If you were looking for a something else after the story well it’s unfortunate that there is no “New Game +”, which is the only thing I can say really hurts the game almost like the creators accidentally forgot about the hardcore gamer and just went for the casual. Your best bet is to create a new character and restart the game which isn’t all bad if you’re the kind of person who is a achievement hunter.
Though it’s been a few years since I played the game, I do still have my original plan of returning back to the game so I can be a Jew and continue to achievement hunt pilgrimage. There maybe some bias here as I’m I fan of South Park, growing up with it in the 90s. I think the developers did a wonderful job with making it feel like I was playing a actual episode of South Park and the Controls are simple enough for anyone to get into. The learning curve isn’t steep, just remember and yes Coolie said it; butters and Stan are the two damn best allies in South Park: SoT. I might be one of the few people around who actually didn’t enjoy the Nazi zombies, not because I was offended or thought it was vulgar but much like it was said in the game, the idea just is over done and I’m not the target audience but I overlook all that for the classic NES Zelda RPG like game-play for the Canada portion. Don’t forget about the Dire aids, which is a hilarious pun played on the animals in Canada. To wrap it up in the words of Carmen to my character “Yeah, you look like someone who would be a thief”.
