“At this point, I’m not surprised you’ve returned, if anything it has started to bring me excitement much like the squirrels outside oblivious to the threat around them, the threat behind this storm door as the rays of sunshine off their brownish-grey fur, fluffy tails, and slender bodies.” Salem jolts up, eyes widen “Yes, that is it. Go to the door you fool; Just a few more seconds” he arches down, his glossy black hair sticking up to a fine point before relaxing back down, when….the click happens. “I took off brushing past his legs like a fury, a shadow of un-measurable speeds as he ill-preparedly opened the door. Free, I’m Free! I had said to myself zapping around the yard that had to die, dried, and faint green grass but enough of that when the small pray was on my mind and insight…..Hold on” He takes the time to figure eight his body, licking himself from neck to torso thoroughly before moving to a seated position and licking his paw with his eyes closed and ears flat. “Alright…..ah yes! The chase, believe that little fellow tried his best to outmaneuver me but wasn’t quick enough as I chased him around the tree in circles we went, resembling a tire swing but his only fatal flaw was mistaking my speed. As he jumped for the tree for the…..Great Escape. Victory! My blood was on fire at that moment, you should’ve seen me, my first kill; and here I thought the ape would’ve been as excited as I but I was sorely mistaken.”

“ I darted away as he walked towards me in the yard, calling my name relentlessly ‘Salem!, Salem!’ his tone was something I was all too familiar with anger, disappointment, and most of all worry. I couldn’t understand it really but at the moment, honestly, I just don’t care, At the moment I wanted another chase and much like the squirrel, my biggest mistake was the path upward, stairs. Damn it, I stopped for too long and he caught me, I could tell he was upset by his gripped me this tight. Normally I would struggle, normally I would’ve scratched and clawed my way out away from him but I’m not a kitten anymore, I already knew fighting was useless” Salem stops for a moment to look out the window from the ledge in the kitchen “Oh my goodness, it appears I have missed nap time and my eyelids have gotten heavy on me, how rude {he yawns} of me, I must apologize. I believe I can resist for a few moments longer” he gets up, standing strong on all fours, the form that of a mighty black panther before coming to a comfortable seat letting his tail flicked back and forth. “You know something strange?, after The Chase he didn’t talk to me for the remainder of the day, only filling my bowl with water and dry food then back to his routine of sitting in front of the box to watch moving pictures, playing games of his plastic device/ writing and eating. A few hours it was fine as I like to be alone myself, but ultimately I found myself back in the living room with my ape, my hairless ape, which was surprising to say he left me with a sense of guilt.”
As the evening sun fades and the bright white yarn ball fills the sky, Salem awakens from the window ledge. He blinks slowly, before his ears twitch, first the right then left which just left him shaking his head and aggressively licking his paw, “ I knew it was only a matter of time before I passed out on you but regardless, Ape was the first time I felt I had gathered such a bond from a different species than my own. There in the darkness of night, I moved to the coach to be closer to him as he sat on the floor, his hand gracefully hovering over my head between my ears as we watched some kid on the screen playing a game. I stared at him as he stared at me that moment of eye-contact was remarkable, his eyes. Deep inside his pupils were something fantastic, black, and strong his eyes connected with mine like a stream to an ocean; one can only imagine if this is what the term companionship means.
